Thirty new and returning officials attended the USA Roller Sports Inline Hockey Officiating Program and will skate at Pittsburgh area rinks for the PIRHL (High School League). The officiating education seminar took place at Bladerunners in Harmerville, PA. The seminar was sponsored by Pennsylvania Interscholastic Roller Hockey League. Ken Knaus, the Colonial Region Referee-in-Chief for USARS, taught a six-hour training seminar, where the work took place both in the classroom and on the floor.

The Roller Hockey Alliance (RHA) will be hosting two free coaching seminars at State Wars over the next few days. With the abundance of coaches, players, parents and roller hockey enthusiasts at State Wars it makes perfect sense for RHA to host these seminars there.

Of the 643 registered players at the recent National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association?s National Championships, only three were women. However, the impact that Megan Gault, Brittany Johnson and Heather Tackett had on their teams this season was big.

Gault, 19-year-old sophomore from Denton, TX, went 8-2-1 for the Lindenwood University Gold Lions in the B Division of the Great Plains Collegiate Inline Hockey League this season.

There weren?t a lot of surprises yesterday on the first day of the National Collegiate Roller Hockey Association National Championships, held at the Sportsplex in Feasterville, Pennsylvania. Most of the teams expected to win, did so.

The Lindenwood University Lions roared to an 11-1 win over the Ohio State Buckeyes at 9 a.m., and then sliced up United States Military Academy at West Point Black Knights like the famous scene in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, 13-4.

Seriously, it?s the truth. The reason I play travel inline hockey over travel ice hockey is because for the most part, the drama doesn?t exist. Yeah, cliques exist in every organization and certain parents and players have better relationships with coaches than others, but you can go tryout for almost any organization in the country and know you have just as good of a chance of making it as the next kid, whereas in ice hockey in the Phoenix-metro area alone, I can think of plenty of organizations that have left talented players off of their rosters just because of ?politics.?

Do you think the kids care whose parent donates more money to the organization every year?

The Jokers won the first game in the round-robin portion of the tournament, but the Boneheadz won the championship, as they broke open a tight game in the second half with a 6-3 victory. Alex Grills of the Boneheadz was named MVP and Conner Walsh of the Boneheadz was named MVG.

From July 16-19, 2008, I participated in the NARCh College Division Championship tournament, held in San Jose, California. Yesterday, the largest hockey tournament in the world ended, but not before Mite, Squirt, Bantam and Peewee Club Division teams experienced inline hockey?s best-organized tournament. Sometimes the biggest victories aren?t necessarily on the rink. In 2005, at the NARCh finals, Mark Pentz won the Squirt gold championship with his teammates. Less than one year later, Pentz was told he would never gain use of his arms or legs again.

The events currently happening at the Sportsplex include the FIRS Junior Men?s World Championships and the AAU/USARS Junior Olympic Championships, which encompass the AAU Junior Olympics Club Championships, the AAU Junior Olympics International Championships and the USARS Adult Championships.

The action on the three rinks at the Sportsplex is excellent (there are also games at the NERC Arena, about 10 minutes away), with quality play from the youngest divisions on up.

Outside the Tour Inline Hockey Arena in Colorado Springs, it was gray and cold as the players from the UC Irvine Anteaters and the Stony Brook University Seawolves warmed up for their elimination-round game in the 10th annual National Collegiate Roller Hockey Championships. The weather was fine, but the Professional Inline Hockey Association?s match up between the Colorado Springs Thunder and the Westminster Blizzard made for an irresistibly bad headline pun.

The Thunder took advantage of several Blizzard penalties in game one, with CJ Yoder making the Blizzard pay. Yoder, one of inline hockey?s finest ambassadors ever, was less than a gracious host for the Blizzard, scoring at several power play goals to open up a tight first game.
